Sophie Lavaud | English

Mountaineer who loves climbing above 8000 m in the Himalayas…

Sophie successfully climbed Mount Everest, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Shishapangma (central), Gasherbrum II, Broad Peak Manaslu and K2, I summited Annapurna I,  Kangchenjunga,  Gasherbrum I, Dhaulagiri, Lhotse and Manaslu main summit in 2022, ShishaPangma main summit on April 26th and Nanga Parbat on June 26th.

On 26 June 2023, by reaching the summit of Nanga Parbat in Pakistan, the 9th highest mountain in the world at 8126 m, French-Swiss-Canadian Sophie Lavaud completed her challenge: to climb all 14 of the world’s 8000 m summits. She has thus completed her Himalayan grand slam, an ambitious project that began in 2012. Sophie Lavaud becomes the first French to have climbed all 14 of the world’s 8,000m summits, the first Swiss woman and the first Canadian.

On 26 June 2023, Sophie Lavaud made Himalayan history.

20 Sophie Lavaud Femme Alpiniste Francaise Portrait

Mountaineer, author, and speaker, known as “Lady 8000,” I am the first French person, the first Swiss woman, and the first Canadian to have climbed all 14 of the world’s peaks over 8,000 meters.

👩 A former businesswoman, based in Geneva for over 20 years, I began my career in the luxury hospitality industry, then worked in the world of cosmetics, and later co-managed an event planning company in the finance sector with my brother

🗻 Passionate about mountaineering, I turned to high-altitude mountaineering in my forties. Since then, my life has been dedicated to the Himalayas and to sharing these unique experiences.

🎤 To date, I have delivered nearly 150 conferences internationally, in both French and English, for major companies across various sectors. As a passionate mountaineer and committed speaker, I believe in the pride of the “followership”, in team spirit, and I speak on many topics related to applying lessons learned in the mountains to life and the corporate world.

📚 I have co-authored several books and have been featured in five documentary films 🎬 that recount my expeditions, including “Sophie Lavaud – The Final Summit”, directed by François Damilano.

💪 Committed beyond the summits, I support women’s empowerment projects in Nepal 🇳🇵, while working to highlight the essential role of Sherpas and to promote more responsible mountaineering with a focus on safety in the mountains.

🏅 In 2024, I was honored by the French Republic with the title of Chevalier of the National Order of Merit.
